What is PlayStation 4 Media Player?

Media Player enables PlayStation 4 users to easily access and play personal photos, music and video files on their TVs that are connected to a PlayStation 4 system. Users can send their files stored in DLNA compatible devices to their PlayStation 4 system via their home network. Users can also enjoy music while playing games, and add files to their “Favourites” so they can easily playback their favorite content. Closed Captions are also available when users are viewing video files. Personal content cannot be shared via the SHARE feature.

If you are using a PlayStation 4 Pro, you can also use Media Player to play 4K video files in mp4 format saved on a USB stick or home server, as well as 4K VR content when using PlayStation VR. Note: You need to be using a 4K-compatible display device in order to view 4K content.

How do I access my files from an external storage device on Media Player?

In order to view or play files from an external storage device, such as a USB stick or external harddrive, video and image files must be saved within a folder on your storage device. Music files in particular must be saved within a folder titled 'MUSIC'.

How do I enable Closed Captions in Media Player?

To enable Closed Captions in Media Player simply go to [Settings] > [Accessibility] > [Closed Captions] and select [Display Closed Captions]. Then simply restart Media Player, load up a video and press OPTIONS to activate Closed Captions.

Sony has recently released the PlayStation 4 media player to the world, which can be downloaded simply by clicking the icon on your main PlayStation 4 menu screen. Once downloaded, you might be thinking, how do I use this to play video files? After all, the PlayStation 3 allowed you to not only play videos, but also store them locally on the hard drive. Unfortunately the latter is not possible with the PS4 (yet!), but you can use a USB stick to play your favourite videos, and here’s how.

  1. Your USB stick needs to be in FAT32 or exFAT (the latter didn’t work for me, and NTFS definitely won’t work). This means that 4GB+ files may be an issue so cut them down to size if need be.
  2. Windows 7/8 don’t make it easy to format your drives to FAT32, so you will have to download a third party piece of software here: FAT32Format
  3. FAT32Format will allow you to format the drive very quickly to FAT32.
  4. If this still doesn’t work, you may have to go for a full format.
    • Go to Start Menu -> Type CMD in Search Programs and Files, right-click to run as admin [Windows 7]
    • Right-click Start button -> Select Command Prompt (Admin) [Windows 8/8.1]
    • Type “format i: /FS:FAT32” without the quotes, where i is replaced with whatever the USB drive is, be sure to get the right drive.
    • Press enter and it should start formatting, but it will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive.
  5. Create a folder on the USB stick, and place all videos into this folder. It doesn’t need to be called PS4, just needs to be a folder, else you won’t see anything.
  6. Audio needs to be in a folder called Music.
  7. You can now go into the Media Player and select the USB stick from the list to watch your videos. Media Servers on your network will also be listed here i.e. Plex etc.

WMV is not supported yet, but this feature was added later on in the PS3’s lifecycle as there is a license issue. So this may be added in a future update. JPG, BMP and PNG photos are also supported.
